The Killer Wore Leather - Book Review

A murder mystery set at a kink convention - The set up sounds great, but overall, I wasn't thrilled.

Basically my complaint is that it wasn't exciting or suspenseful. I was bored listening to everyone whine about everything. The main convention host was constantly complaining about how hard it was to run a convention, how understaffed he was and how he wasn't making money. The lead detective was constantly complaining about how she wasn't treated fairly at the police department and that her new partner was close minded. The contestants were each complaining about everything and over-all, the characters were just a bunch of cry-babies.

Maybe the problem with this book is that Laura Antoniou knows the convention's inner workings too intimately and exposed the sordid and mundane facts too well. It really takes the bloom off the rose and spoils the fantasy of sexy dominatrices, macho gay studs and the whole beautiful fetish scene. She bursts the bubble of the convention fun too - Only one person, a volunteer, actually gets laid and nobody seems to be having fun. With all the potential sex and fetish toys to explore, Ms. Antoniou spends all her pages describing the stage workings and ticketing process instead actually exploring the dungeon and other exciting fetish stuff. I liked the subject and the setting, but I was really expecting more naughtiness with my murder.

She knows her stuff but is just wasn't a fun read. Maybe her next one will be better.
